Basic Design > FTP Uploading
Principles
One user I'm in constant contact with complained he couldn't upload his website using the function in X5.
Then one day when my brother visited the user concerned, he contacted me via the telephone. We then set about rectifying this phenomenon. There were several mistakes and we got it sorted within 2 minutes and uploaded the website, first time in 2 years by using X5!! The user had always uploaded the website via CuteFTP which we had shown him 2 years previously, because we were under the assumption the ISP was to blame, through the information the user had passed on to us.
If you can connect using a FTP client there's no reason why you shouldn't be able to connect to your server using X5.
When you sign on the dotted line for your internet, you are given a user name and password. This should be kept very safe, as this is your key to the gateway for the internet!
You can use the space given to you by the ISP (Internet Service Provider) or you can go with a hosting company.
Your ISP
When you sign up for the internet you are usually given some web-space with your account. The mount is something like 55Mb. Which is adequate for a personal website. My ISP informed me I was allowed 50MB which I use for my sons website. This is adequate because he has very little content. Just recently another user told me about an ISP that only allows 15MB?? (However I've found out since, from a user in the USA some ISP's do NOT give you free webspace and the users then have to seek FREE web hosting)
Having been given your own space on the ISP server, you can then upload your website, using their FTP Address. Using the username and password already given to you on sign up, you can then proceed to publish your website. (Having checked Use Passive FTP and making sure you upload the WHOLE website the first time round) You should see the next screen being the server!
NB: If you are inserting quite a lot of music/video/images you will need a hosting account. As the space that these guy's can take up is tremendous.
Hosting
If you prefer more advanced functions for your website PHP etc.... a hosting company will give you your own space on their servers. (This is really for the advanced user and business users, that require a lot of space and bandwidth)
NB: Please do your homework on different hosting companies! One user started with a FREE account and upgraded because they wanted to make it into an ecommerce website. They ended up paying £34 ($50) per month!
Differences
The only difference between the two above are usually determined by the content of your website.
Either personal or business.
Usually an ISP server will NOT support favicons or PHP, MySQL etc.. and is just a parking place for a website. A complex site calls for a more comprehensive hosting package that provides database support and application development platforms (e.g. PHP, Java, Ruby on Rails, ColdFusion, and ASP.NET). These facilities allow the customers to write or install scripts for applications like forums and content management. For e-commerce, SSL is also highly recommended.

Parameters & Passive FTP
Parameters (ie.. the value)
This is another word for the information required to connect to the server.
Passive FTP (File Transfer Protocol)
This function is basically an action.
Its asking permission to gain access to the server in question.
Servers have firewalls and will not let just anyone connect to them, unless the parameters are correct. The passive FTP should be ticked in the X5 program.
Directory
Most Hosting servers have directories eg: Public_html and /www
Many vary and this information will be provided by the Hosting company concerned.
One I found unusual was the username was the Initial Directory. The user tried always to connect before we sorted this anomoly out.
FTP Client Uploading * EVO 8 *
I have visited many servers to help users upload their website through X5, only to find the "BWS" & "IWP" file are on there to. (Its obvious they're uploading the website from the original place where they keep their project)
When you first acquire X5 and load the program onto your machine it actually puts a separate folder on your computer. This is solely for the purpose of gathering your website files before uploading to the internet.
They are called the Temporary/Website X5 folders and these are "HIDDEN" folders. Incomedia have made these folders to collect all the files before uploading to the internet. UPLOAD using the EXPORTING facilty in X5 itself!!
If you don't upload through X5
Your RES Folder is NOT put on your server.... this holds your:
CSS, JavaScripts, Website X5 Engine - Website, Cart and Blog Structure's
WARNING: DO NOT USE A FTP CLIENT TO UPLOAD YOUR FILES! FILL IN THE ACCURATE PARAMETERS IN THE SERVER DETAILS AREA/TICK PASSIVE FTP AND YOU SHOULD CONNECT STRAIGHT AWAY.

CuteFTP 8 Home
This is a Globalscape product. I have had mine for 10 years or so and its been one of the best investments I've ever made. I have had it on two computers at the same time and moved it to various comy's without a hitch. I've even had the same serial number all throughout the time I have used this. It is quite expensive I think personally, but has paid for itself many times over, saving me a lot of precious time I would normally do in several operations.
You also have the opportunity to save (backup) your registration key & important data contained in the Site manager. If you are like me and have several websites with different passwords etc.. it can be saved to a disc or even print out the information for future reference.
You have a 30 day unlimited trial at first and I have pointed many users to this product. The interface and wizard is dead simple to use and it has a built in HTML editor (which is more for advanced users)
HTML Editor:
You can retrieve a HTML file directly off the server input your data and quickly send it back on the internet for the desired effect to take place immediately.
