Screen Sizes

Pro Design > Paint.net

I often received emails of people getting terribly upset that the website they've worked hours on doesn't look anything like they intended on their friend's or neighbor's or relative's screen but looks totally fine on theirs. The main thing people don't realize is that computer screens all show a different number of pixels (pixels being those little dots that show different colors).

Common "rectangle" 4:3 (noted 1-4) and "widescreen" 16:9 (noted 5-8) screen types:

Resolutions (in pixels)

1. 640 x 480
2. 800 x 600 (common)
3. 1024 x 768 (most common)
4.
1280 x 1024

5. 1280 x 800
6. 1440 x 900
7.
1680 x 1050
8. 1920 x 1080 (High Def)

Screen 4 (1280 x 1024)
is shown with light gray
area of screen 1 (640 x 480)
showing more than
400% availibility.

Aspect Ratio?

The aspect ratio of a standard TV set was 4:3 meaning it was almost square... whereas the modern TV's are now widescreen 16:9. Camera's started off with the 4:3 ratio and this ratio is still common in today's camera's. That is why PC Wallpapers are designed to fit the most popular sizes!!
